Overview

Professor James Calder is a founding member of Fortius Clinic and an internationally recognised specialist in the treatment of sports injuries.

He works with elite athletes and professional teams across the world, including Premier League football clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Premiership rugby teams. He also supports British Athletics, the British Olympic team, England Cricket, Rugby and Football, as well as national gymnastics, hockey, netball and sailing squads. In addition, he regularly provides care for dancers from the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and serves as Medical Advisor to Dance UK.

Professor Calder trained in Brisbane under Dr Terry Saxby and completed a travelling Sports Orthopaedic Fellowship in the USA. He was appointed Consultant at North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke in 2002, later joining Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2010. He is also Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London.

He continues to lead and publish research at both Fortius Clinic and Imperial College. He is President of ESSKA-AFAS, immediate Past-Chairman of the Achilles Tendon Study Group, and Specialty Editor for the Bone and Joint Journal. His main research interests include the Achilles tendon, articular cartilage, and sports-related foot and ankle injuries, with a particular focus on arthroscopic (keyhole) surgical techniques.

Outside his clinical work, Professor Calder is passionate about advancing sports injury research and supporting the next generation of orthopaedic specialists.
